On March 4, a law goes into effect in Mexico City that allows same-sex couples to marry and adopt children. Mexican President Felipe Calderon and other detractors of the law are scrambling for ways to stop it from taking effect.
Calderon said the country's Constitution defines marriage as between a man and a woman, but legal
experts disagree with his interpretation. His administration is challenging the law in court, pointing to a constitutional clause protecting family. Meanwhile, Roman Catholic groups are standing strongly behind the conservative federal government.
